HAIR EXTENSIONS?
READ THIS FIRST!
Have you always wondered about extensions, but are too shy to try? Got some burning questions before you take the plunge? Let’s get them answered so you can start turning your dream hair into reality.
How do I choose the right type of extensions for me? From clip-ins to tape-ins, weaves and keratin bonds — each type has its own unique benefits and care requirements. Your Moxie stylist will help you choose the best approach to suit your lifestyle and achieve the look you desire, but here are some common questions and concerns we hear from first-timers.
- I want to try out extensions before going all in. Clip-ins are truly a no-commitment way to dip your toe in the water. You can put them in for special occasions (or every day) and they can last for years of multiple uses. The Moxie team will help you select your clip-ins and show you how to use them to amp up your style.
- I need a cost-effective, more permanent solution. Tape-ins are the next level of convenience and ease — and they can stay secure for up to two months. They’re lightweight and unlike clip-ins, you just leave them in, day and night.
- I’d like to avoid the use of chemicals. A weave is a more time-consuming in-salon process, but it looks fabulous once your stylist strategically micro-braids in strands of hair to give you a lush, full look that can last for up to 10 weeks without the need for chemicals or adhesives.
- I want a seamless look. Keratin bond extensions use heat to create a hard-to-detect blend with your natural hair. While no extensions are completely permanent, a Keratin bond extension can last up to five months with proper care.
What’s the difference between natural and synthetic extensions? For the most natural look, stick with the most natural product — and that’s human hair extensions. The highest quality is known as Remy hair, which has a smoother, silkier look that’s easier to manage and holds up well over time — up to a year or longer when properly maintained. Synthetic hair is made from a plastic fiber composite that mimics the look and feel of real human hair but moves differently. It also can be more challenging to blend, can’t be colored or styled in the same way as human hair and usually lasts about one to three months.
How do I choose the right color and texture for my extensions? Matching your existing hair color and texture gives you a more seamless look and requires less upkeep. If you plan to color your hair, discuss this with your Moxie stylist beforehand, as only 100% natural human hair extensions are recommended for coloring. You can get extensions that are straight, curly and just about every texture in between. Natural hair extensions can also be permed, but this should only be done by an expert to avoid overprocessing — the hair quality and the type of perm solution used can greatly affect the outcome. Extensions require special care at home when using any chemical processes, as they can become dry and damaged more easily than your own natural hair.
How do I care for my extensions? Human hair can hold up to hot blow dryers and curling irons, but using a heat protectant will help minimize damage. When washing, grab a sulfate-free shampoo and moisturizing conditioner. Use a soft bristle brush or wide-toothed comb for styling — start from the ends and work your way up to avoid putting undue tension on your extensions.
For synthetic, use a shampoo specifically designed for synthetic hair and be sure to rinse with cool water (hot water can damage fibers). You want to avoid high heat from styling tools as well — use a wide-toothed comb, and avoid boar bristle brushes on curly extensions. Also avoid brushing when wet. Chlorine and saltwater can damage both human and synthetic hair, so it’s best to forgo a dip in the pool or ocean. We’ll give you guidelines for proper maintenance and styling to get the most out of your extensions, no matter which type you choose.
